EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - DEBRECEN 2005 WOMEN’S QUALIFYING EVENT
BETH FIRST ON FLOOR AND BARS AND SECOND IN ALL AROUND COMPETITION ! SAM ALSO QUALIFIES IN VAULT
A fantastic performance from Beth Tweddle in today’s qualifying events saw Beth defeat the current Olympic Champion Emilie Lepennec on Bars to set up a thrilling final on Sunday. Beth made British gymnastics history at European’s last year where she became the first British gymnast to win a Silver medal in a European Championships. Now Beth hopes to go one better and become the European Champion on her favourite piece, but Emelie will be determined to become European as well as Olympic Champion!
Beth also came first on floor and sixth on vault to qualify for three apparatus finals on Sunday and finish second in the All Around Individual Championships! A fantastic performance from our brightest star in World Gymnastics. GB’s Samantha Bayley also performed well to finish 5th on Vault, in an event featuring Russian stars Anna Pavlova and Elena Zamolodchikova! And to complete a great performance from GB, European Junior Champion on A Bars Rhian Pugh finished just outside the top 8 scoring 8.912. to narrowly miss out on a place in Sunday’s apparatus finals. Congratulations to the GB girls and good luck to Beth in tomorrow’s All Around Finals.
France and Italy put in strong performances with Emilie also qualifying for 3 apparatus finals to finish first in the All Around Individual qualifying event. Italy’s Fracesca Benolli was third scoring 36.349, just 0.376 behind Beth, with Marine Debauve from France in 4th place.
